STREET TOUGH
Hard-Core, Anything Goes, Street Fighting FundamentalsMay 2004 Release Available Now from: Paladin Press If you want to learn what it takes to prevail in real, all-out street combat, you need to get Street Tough. A 6th-degree black belt who has trained in everything from jujitsu, judo, karate and aikido to boxing, grappling and stick and knife fighting, Phil Giles has had to put his martial skills to the test on the street repeatedly over the years. What ultimately emerged was the Street Tough scientific fighting method. Based on what proved effective in no-holds-barred street and bar brawls, it is a distillation of the most practical skills, drills and training methods culled from his 30 years of martial arts training. In this book, Phil Giles provides full-throttle instruction in how to prevail in a street or bar fight, from the proper combat mind-set to the first stand-up blows to when the fight gets down and dirty on the ground. This is some of the most aggressive self-defense training you are ever likely to receive, including the best ways to close with an opponent to smother his attack, how to slam someone up against a wall and really go to work on him, and vicious ground fighting tactics that will make an opponent instantly realize that he made a very bad mistake when he decided to assault you. A series of intense training drills performed at full power and full speed sets the Street Tough program apart from all other self-defense regimens. 8 1/2 x 11, softcover, photos, 176 pp. ISBN 1-58160-439-4 Phil Giles is director of the Society of Scientific Combat Arts. His more than 30 years of real-world fighting experience and formal martial arts training forms the basis of the Street Tough combat program. |

Endorsement
My association with Phil Giles extends back over 30 years to our school days, through to the present day. Now the author of this new book on 'Street Tough' Fundamentals, it is with great pleasure that I write this endorsement for the book, and fighting method explained within. I feel in part responsible for the arts birth from its embryonic stage, and watched it develop through the years to the fighting science, now known as 'Street Tough' Combat Jiu Jitsu. A chance meeting in 1983 with Phil in Central America led me to discover that even though I was well schooled in street fighting, (learned and perfected on the North East Coast of England), I soon discovered that I wasn't quite as skilful as I thought. Watching Phil train and fight could only be described as an eye-opener. Phil inspired me to want to train and practice in these methods and concepts, and for nearly a year, 5 nights a week for 3 to 4 hours a night, we trained together full contact, with little or no pads or gloves, just a mixture of brutal 'Street Tough' reality, knocks, black eyes and bruises. Never the one to just rely on gym sparring only, I wanted
to test myself for real, with the conditioning, skills and strategies,
which we perfected together. They say that knowledge breeds confidence, well Phil has both in abundance. One final thought, I have met some skilful and knowledgeable fighters around the world, but not quite from the same mould as Phil, but what remains uppermost in my admiration is his humility in the way he passes on his 'Street Tough' methods to those who seek out the truth in combat. This book forms a definitive guide, which will initiate the reader to those innovative methods, which I have used successfully in over 200 fights and altercations, whilst serving with the Airborne Forces, overseas and in the UK, and in subsequent civilian life. In conclusion, If hand to hand combat is your requirement then this is the book which will underpin your instruction program. |

Foreword
Writing a Foreword to a book is often more difficult than most people think. It is easy to be biased if you both know and respect the Author. It is also important not to simply say "Oh, it's wonderful, marvellous etc". Insincerity will soon show itself to the readers. So how to give an honest foreword. Therein lies the problem. Well, since my good friend and Student, Geoff Thompson broke ground with
his excellent books; many have tried to "Jump on the bandwagon."
as it were. Some have succeeded; others failed, some quite miserably.
Because the most important aspects simply have to come across, in order
for the reader to trust the Author... These are; trust in his background
and knowledge, and knowing that the person who gives birth to the words
actually believes them So now, you have it. You can TRUST Phil, and this trust will allow you to read and digest the honesty of this book. You may find Phil doesn't pull any punches, and be thankful of it. I decided when I was asked to write this foreword, not to just think of the book, but the man behind it. This then made it all the easier to put MY words to Phil's. Genuine, 'hard-core' instructors are rare, so when you find one, be happy
to study under him or her. Thanks Phil, it was an honour to be asked and a pleasure to be able to deliver. Dave Turton 7th Dan: |

The book consists of four sections, covering the major areas of street fighting and self-defence. This is the first of a number of manuals I propose to write, which shall become progressively more technical and advance in execution and training methods.
